Hertzian Tales: Electronic Products, Aesthetic Experience, and Critical Design

I have included this book on my journal to illustrate a way in which my work could progress in the future after this MA. It would be interesting to explore the notion of the 'digital object'.

In the preface to his book Dunne argues that,

"Design is not engaging with the social, cultural and ethical implications of the technologies it makes so sexy and consumable"

He believes that design has the potential to be used as a 'critical medium' for reflecting the impact of technology. (Dunne 2005: preface).

He begins his introduction by explaining,

"Whereas architecture and furniture design have successfully operated in the realm of cultural speculation for some time, product designs strong ties to the marketplace have left little room for speculation the cultural function of electronic products. As ever more of our social and cultural experiences are mediated by electronic products, designers need to develop ways of exploring how this electronic mediation might enrich people's lives."
