Handmade Nation
The Rise of DIY, Art, Craft, and Design
Faythe Levine and Cortney Heimerl
Princeton Architectural Press, New York, 2008
This manifesto appears at the beginning of Handmade Nation, a new American book...

Reading this book was interesting as initially I thought it would be very relevant to my work and way of thinking. However it has a different idea of 'craft' than the one I am developing, a more political and DIY based manifesto. Faythe Levine describes the indie American craft as "creating an independent economy free from corporate ties" (Levine and Heimerl 2008:preface).
The image below from Handmade Nation shows members of Knitta attaching a piece of 'graffiti knitting'. They tag things in urban areas with colourful pieces of knitting. Knitta describe their work as humanising and communicating (Levine and Heimerl 2008:100,103) which I think it is.
